Refund and Cancellation Policy for Something

Version 0.1 · Last updated 30 October 2026 ·

Draft. For review by BAARS DESIGN and its lawyer before publication. Not legal advice. The consumer section rests on a reading of angrerettloven on Lovdata on 2026-10-30; a lawyer must confirm which exception applies to a software subscription. “Decision” lines need the owner’s answer.

This policy is part of the Terms of Service. It has three parts: cancelling, refunds for business customers, and the legal right of withdrawal for consumers.

1. Cancelling

You can cancel at any time:

  • in the billing portal (Settings > Account & Billing > Manage billing), or
  • by emailing [something@baars.design] from the account’s email address.

Cancelling stops the next renewal. Paid features keep working until the end of the period you have paid for. Then the app falls back to the Free plan. Nothing on your Mac is deleted or locked.

A 14-day Team trial ends on its own. There is nothing to cancel and no card is taken.

2. Refunds for business customers

If you buy for a company or for your profession, there is no statutory right to cancel a purchase, and the rules below are the whole refund policy.

Monthly plans. No refund for the current month after it has started. Cancel and the plan ends at the end of the month.

Yearly plans. [Option A] You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of the first yearly payment if no seat has sent a pull request to an organisation repository in that time. After 14 days, or after use, no refund; the plan runs to the end of the year. [Option B] You can ask for a pro-rata refund of the unused months at any time, minus any discount you received for paying yearly.

Seats. Removing a seat mid-period does not produce a refund. Adding a seat is charged pro rata. Seats you remove reduce the charge from the next period.

Our fault. If the Service was unavailable for a long period because of us, or we end your contract without you being in breach, we refund the unused part of the period.

Duplicate charges and mistakes. Always refunded. Email us.

Decision: Option A (14-day goodwill window on yearly, as in docs/BUSINESS-MODEL.md § 5.6) or Option B (pro-rata any time). A is standard SaaS practice and simpler to administer. B is more generous and reduces chargeback risk. Pick one; the terms and the Stripe portal settings must match it.

3. Consumers: your 14-day right of withdrawal

If you buy Something as a private person, for purposes mainly outside your trade or profession, you are a consumer and Norwegian law gives you a right of withdrawal (angrerett) under angrerettloven (LOV-2014-06-20-27). Consumers in other EEA countries have the same right under their national version of the Consumer Rights Directive.

The right. You can withdraw from the purchase without giving a reason within 14 days from the day the contract was made (§ 21). Tell us before the 14 days end, by email to [something@baars.design], or by using the standard withdrawal form at the end of this page. We will confirm receipt by email.

What you get back. We refund everything you paid, using the same payment method, without undue delay and at the latest 14 days after receiving your notice (§ 24).

If you asked us to start right away. When you buy, you can choose to start using the paid features at once instead of waiting 14 days. If you do, the law lets us keep a proportionate amount for the service delivered up to the day you withdrew (§ 8(1)(j), § 26). Example: on a monthly plan of $19, withdrawing after 7 days means we keep about $4.43 and refund the rest.

Decision: whether to charge the proportionate amount at all. Charging it is the law’s default and is fair to the business. Refunding in full regardless is simpler, kinder, and costs little at these prices. The checkout wording in the README changes with this choice.

When the right ends early. The law has two exceptions that could apply to Something, and which one fits is a question for a lawyer:

  • § 22(c): a service that has been fully delivered before the 14 days end, if you expressly agreed to that and acknowledged that the right would be lost. A monthly or yearly subscription is not fully delivered within 14 days, so this exception would normally not remove your right during that period.
  • § 22(n): digital content not delivered on a physical medium where delivery has begun with your express consent and acknowledgement that the right is lost, and we confirmed that consent to you on a durable medium (§ 18). If the download and activation of the app is treated as digital content, the right could end as soon as you activate a paid plan with that consent.

Our position in this draft: we treat a Something subscription as a service. You keep the 14-day right even if you start at once, and we keep only the proportionate amount described above. We will not ask you to waive the right at checkout.

Lawyer: confirm this reading. If § 22(n) is the better fit and the owner wants to use it, the checkout needs an explicit consent and acknowledgement box plus a confirmation email that repeats it (§ 18, second paragraph). The README has both versions of the wording. Also confirm that digitalytelsesloven (LOV-2022-06-17-56) applies alongside and gives consumers remedies for defects independent of this policy.

After the 14 days. You can still cancel at any time (section 1). There is no refund for the rest of the current month on a monthly plan. On a yearly plan the business rules in section 2 apply to you as a goodwill policy, in addition to your statutory rights.

If something is wrong. Your rights when the Service does not work as agreed come from digitalytelsesloven and are not limited by this policy: repair, price reduction, termination and damages as the law provides.

Disputes. You can ask Forbrukertilsynet for mediation at https://www.forbrukertilsynet.no/send-sak-til-mekling. You can also bring a case in the courts of the country where you live.

4. How refunds are paid

Refunds go back to the payment method used, through Stripe. Banks usually show them within 5 to 10 business days. We cannot refund to a different card or account.

5. Standard withdrawal form (consumers)

Copy this into an email to [something@baars.design], or send it by post to the address on the Company information page.

To: BAARS DESIGN, [postal address as on the Company information page], [something@baars.design]

I hereby give notice that I withdraw from my contract for the following service:
Something, plan: ____________________

Ordered on: ____________________
Name of consumer: ____________________
Address of consumer: ____________________
Email used for the account: ____________________

Signature (only if sent on paper): ____________________
Date: ____________________

Lawyer: the Norwegian regulation on the withdrawal form (forskrift om angreskjema) sets the standard text. Replace the block above with the official form text, in Norwegian for Norwegian consumers, before publishing. The standard form carries the trader’s geographic address, so once the form is final the address appears here as well as on the imprint page. See the README decision on publishing the address.
